Five things you didn't know you wanted to know about toner cartridges.

If you are reading this blog than, like most of us, you work around printers and toner everyday. But, you don't really think about toner unless you have a problem, or need supplies. Here i have listed some of the most common frequently asked questions about toner and brief answers to those questions.

What is toner anyway?
Toner is a powdery substance made from pigment dyes (black, cyan, magents or yellow) and plastic. Manufacturers use plastic because it melts as the paper is passed through the fuser to provide a sharp, lasting image on the paper.

What is a remanufactured cartridge?
A remanufactured toner cartridge is a cartridge that has been rebuilt using some components of a recycled toner cartridge, mixed with new parts. This allows manufacturers to recycle individual parts whilst only reusing the large core of the cartridge itself. Remanufactured cartridges, though purposefully given a bad name by OEM's (such as Lexmark or HP) are essentially the same thing as the OEM name-brand cartridges. In fact, many OEM companies include return labels in their boxes - what do YOU think they do with the returned cartridges? That's right, the remanufacture them and sell them as new. Do remanufactured cartridges perform as well as the OEM?
YES, in most cases they do. Will a remanufactured toner cartridge void my printers warranty?
NO, though many OEM's claim otherwise, in effort to drive their own sales, using a remanufactured toner cartridge will NOT void your printers warranty. What is the best way to remove toner from my clothes?
Do NOT use hot water! Hot water will cause they plastics in the toner to soften and bind the pigment tot he fibers of your clothes. Rinse any toner with COLD water and avoid brushing or rubbing the stained portion of the clothing. Before rinsing, try to loosen the particles by removing form water and gently shaking.

Be loyal to your institution: a national pandemic

We've all seen it,

UNC shirts on the campus of NC State, Michigan shirts on the campus of Ohio State, UF shirts on campus at... well, anywhere.

Why is this? Sure, some people are graduate students, thus their wearing of another universities apparel on your campus is justified. But, when you delve into the core of the problem you find one thing to remain true in most cases; that is someone grew up a fan of a "athletically superior" school. Which in itself is not a problem, really. Yet so many people get offended whilst seeing these "off-color" shirts, baseball hats, and hoodies on the wrong campus. Mark it down, i am one of them.

Sure, when i attended UCF we were (and still are) far from a power house in any sport. But, there was nothing you could do to grind my gears more than wearing "that other school's" colors on my campus (by the way their colors don't even go together... talk about tacky!). My (first) senior year at UCF i had a professor (Dr. Richard Lapchick) who stressed the importance of "being loyal to one's own institution." He even went so far as to take away hoodies and ball-caps of those wearing the "wrong colors" and saved them until the end of the semester when he offered them back to the students... i was surprised when one student told him to keep his small collection of Thug University caps; or, i should say University of Miami. Along the way, Dr. Lapchick taught me a lot about sports marketing... more-so, he taught me a lot about being loyal to MY UNIVERSITY. The university, which by definition consists of students and alumni of the great University of Central Florida.

Supporting a university and its athletics programs is a lot more than showing up to football games on Saturday and cheering for your favorite team. It means more than saying "woo hoo Go Gators #1!" To truly be loyal to ones institution one must take pride in his degree (or prospective degree) at every level. This means showing up to every game during your schools 17 game football losing streak (very painful) as well as living a life surrounded by all things "your institution." Take pride in the university you attend(ed) it will mean a lot more to you in the long-run than cheering for the nation's #1 NCAA football team will. When YOUR UNIVERSITY wins the title, will you be on the bandwagon or will you be pulling the bandwagon?

I guarantee if you stick by the university whose definition includes YOUR NAME, you will:
- have networking opportunities otherwise not available
- have a greater sense of self worth as you are PROUD of the degree on your wall
- be much happier when your favorite NCAA team is successful
- consider YOUR UNIVERSITY to be a part of you, rather than you being a part of some university.
- and, last but not least, you WILL be much happier about telling people where you went to school, knowing they only cheer for a schools sports programs.

How to build a Greener Workplace:
for less money than you are spending now.

In a world where "Going Green" is the New Thing there are more ways to become environmentally friendly than you can even imagine. However, when many companies are coming up with their plans on how to operate greener they tend to have one thing in common. That thing is money, A LOT OF IT!

But, why is this? Why are companies spending thousands of dollars each year to go green when it requires so much extra money? Its simple really; honestly, it is! This trend, in the work-place is done almost exclusively to drive revenues.

Naturally, there are many other things that the average office and small-business can do to operate in a more environmentally friendly fashion.Change the light bulbs, keep the doors and windows closed, set the AC at 78. These are all great ideas that cost just pennies; but, that is the change in revenue as well as a result.Pennies.

You've heard the news:

Staples is building a new green retail stores.

But, how does this affect you? What can you do to continually go green in YOUR workplace?

Sure, you can urge your boss to tear down the existing structure and build a leaner, meaner, greener workplace. Maybe you can convince whomever is in charge of your companies car fleet to turn in the Hummers and buy a herd of Chevy Volts. And, yes you can easily convince the building maintenance department to install energy efficient light bulbs and low-flow water saving faucets, cash willing. But, lets be honest with each other - that costs additional monies that most American companies don't currently have.
